This bleeds into general relativity as well. It was stated that mass deforms space and causes objects to move in proportion to that curvature. So began the useless and purely mathematical analysis of the stress and strain tensors of 4 dimensional space. Because you can. And because modern science has once again devolved into mathematical tricks and heuristics. But it ignores one important detail. An object must still experience a field/force/whatever along the rectilinear co-ordinates to find itself in implicit motion towards a more massive object (doesn't matter if space itself is curved)
A theory (from my reading of "The Logic of Scientific Discovery" by Karl Popper, and my personal research into other fields of science):
Science split off from philosophy to empirically study the material world. Its drive had been: Find descriptive statements for events and things that can be falsified and replaced with better statements, while trying also to find the set of universal statements/mechanisms that can describe all phenomena.
Somewhere around the early 20th century, science devolved into pure engineering. Engineering has never concerned itself with forming theories or statements or underlying mechanisms. And around the mid 20th century it devolved further into pure mathematical heuristics.
Take quantum mechanisms for example. The name is misleading, since it doesn't propose any mechanics whatsoever; instead choosing to conveniently hide behind the Copenhagen Interpretation. It consists of ad-hoc statements designed to remove inconsistencies and simultaneously claims that the drive to search for underlying mechanisms is a useless one. The biggest such statement and operation is re-normalization. Quantum mechanics can instead be titled quantum mathematical heuristics instead, since every experimental set up has its own statements and rules added in post-facto (you can confirm this by reading papers on experiments from the 60s till now).
String theory is another example. Multiple dimensions of distance over multiple dimensions of time can directly be interpreted (and experimentally verified) as higher order accelerations. But it has instead been interpreted in the Minkowski space manner (which is itself a mathematical trick). And thus requires complicated re-normalization procedures and curved space to even begin to make predictions.
Modern science has 2 characteristics: One is that it is impossible to make any sense or find underlying mechanisms. So instead we must find mathematical optimization models that predict phenomena (read machine learning). Two is that science has been taken over by marketing/sales. Because wormholes, 10 dimensions, time paradoxes and other such exotic constructs are easily marketable and form systems from which other media can be derived.Read More
