@TitusTorquatus

Gen X and early millennials really identified with hyper-individualist, proto-nihilist TRP. Nothing matters, so build yourself up and learn to stop caring so much.

As a guy on the bleeding (front) edge of GenX, I concur. "Life meaningless, death is inevitable and we are all fundamentally alone." Ofc, as I am an extrovert and generally happy, I react to this differently than the Nihilists and the Calvinists would: We're here for as long as we are, so do things you enjoy.

@adam-l I hope not. We need that fucker re-elected. Sure he's a narcissist who is waaaaaaaaaaay the fuck out of his depth, but who did you think you were getting? A philospher-king? Talent comes with limitations.

Think about what the alternative would be. Stumbles McMyturn would have us in 2+ more stupid wars at a minimum, and that's before we get to the jacked taxes and the Feminazi bullshit.

Biden would be slightly preferable to HRC because he's less competent, but the guy barely knows what state he's in at any given time. Imagine what the morning is like at his house. Jill nudges him awake, and says: "It's 2020. I'm your wife. Trump is president. You are running in the Democratic primary. Don't mention Ukraine and try not to sniff people."

Remember when Trump shut down inbound travel from China on Jan 31? Biden called him a racist and a xenophobe. The Dems would rather millions of citizens die than be called names, so they wouldn't have stopped the flights and we'd have massive casualties.

Don't expect Trump to be perfect. He's not. But he's given us 4 (hopefully 4 more) years of an America that is at least a sense memory of the America of the past.

@-Anteros-

Predict tomorrows lotto numbers.

Explain to me how the lottery is a black swan event. There's a SuperMegaJackpot Lotto periodically. That one individual will win it is not easily predictable, but he likelihood that it will be won is based on mathematics (# of different number combinations sold/# of all possible combinations).

Solar storms are now predicted across multiple dimensions and cause little issue. These are not black swans (an unknown unknown).

That's my point. Taleb used the Carrington Event as an example of a Black Swan Event.

@VasiliyZaitzev

Everything is predictable.

Predict tomorrows lotto numbers.

Carrington Event? Had one already

Solar storms are now predicted across multiple dimensions and cause little issue. These are not black swans (an unknown unknown).

Giant Killer Asteroid from Outer Space? Ask dinosaurs

When? how big of an asteroid? This is a known, unknown.

Yellowstone Supervolcano? Any day now.

Been hearing this for years now. When is it going to happen? Is it the same as global warming hysteria? sounds like it. Again, known unknown.

Extrapolating all this out is folly wrapped in woe-is-me existentialism. Its not that these are predictable its that "everything has been done", "theres nothing new" blah.

The prevention of black swans is anti-fragility, this should be the focus.

@StoicRanger Probably pose questions. I am mostly on the TRP reddit site, but will eventually move to here when traffic increases. But I do answer questions here (and in the "Uncle Vasya" tribe).

@MentORPHEUS

This puts me in the position of arguing whether this is a black swan event with the person who coined the phrase.

Nah, the concept goes back to Juvenal or some other Dead Roman Guy, at least.

"It's not a black swan bro, because we predicted this!"

Everything is predictable. Carrington Event? Had one already. Giant Killer Asteroid from Outer Space? Ask dinosaurs. Yellowstone Supervolcano? Any day now.

Oh, and some things that Taleb calls Black Swan Events aren't really. WWI? It's just the Franco-Prussian War with more steps. The French and English had been fighting each other on various continents for at least a century and a half (French & Indian War, Napoleonic War). And Caesar conquered Gaul in 50 BC. Europeans have been fighting each other on a grand scale and creating and destroying empires for a couple of millenia.

Rise of the internet? I dunno. Any time Kirk or Spock asked the computer for information from "Starfleet Records" that looks a lot like the internet.

Etc., etc.
