Clearly not, because currency only has value in the context of what you can

As you maybe can sense from my previous posting, I did mention not poverty level of available goods. As pure example. You can have car, newest phone, but can't buy new one more than once every x months. Major downside being infinite increase in paperwork, exceptions...

you can't consume, then there is no incentive to produce.

I have expected this come up. But didn't want to put too much limit on imagination. So yeah. In free market it wouldn't work anyway as people would start to order from abroad. Also I'm from a country where I still remember rationing cards and standing in a queues to get pack of oranges - if lucky. But the idea alone is interesting to me: for developed country not commies country.

I don't think its doable anyway. Not for extended period of time as it happened back in time in USA.

@lurkerhasarisen

Interesting take. I never thought much why I was thinking that USA got richer during war.

When I read what you say, I have this Q:

  • doesn't matter what was manufactured if
    • repurposing factories paid for itself
    • increased export and income
  • if people all of the sudden couldn't buy stuff, but got same income, wouldn't they get more wealthy (despite inconvenience, but inconvenience limited consumptionism)
  • was infrastructure modernized and improved (new roads etc), to make war manufacturing more efficient, benefited later

Further: what would happen if consumptionism was limited with ration cards today (not starvation levels, meritocracy based)? Not globally, just one country. All the extra goods would be exported and income pupoed into said country.

I'd love to pull the social experiment stunt with 50~100 men. Hire the venue let only the pack and girls. Invite some small time celeb DJ for advertisment, but put him behind glass so nooone could talk to him/her. Charge 5/10/15 on a door so it would keep them inside. Let the gossip out that big celeb is coming. Expensive drinks.

All men would be in " women ignore mode" creating nice small bubble of alternative world for social exp.
