Let me reference, again, our old friend Freud:

Religion is a painfully obvious reenactment of the father-child relationship. The all-mighty Father who loves and is giving, but whom you sometimes need to placate, otherwise he can become terrible - except if you repent for your sins, in which case he can forgive you.

It is a regression, which, like all regressions, gives peace of mind at a terrible cost.

Another interesting observation, from when I read Homer. In Iliad, the godly "heroes of old" could lift with the one hand and throw stones so big, that even two of the contemporary men couldn't lift between them. Let's try to picture that literally: when is such a thing probable? Yeah. It doesn't have to do with working out. It has to do with what your father was capable of when you were a kid. It's plain old transference again.

Are you an orthodox Christian?

If so whats the best book giving a birds eye view of the faith.

I'm not an Orthodox Catholic or Eastern Rites Christian. While I've no grievance with my orthodox kin, I'm a Latin Rites Christian, or Roman Catholic, so what advisement I can only offer will be limited at best. You should really make the time to search for a website that can help you locate the respective Orthodox and Roman Catholic diocese for your area and their subordinate churches. Call their offices to tell them of your interest or visit them during mass, but be prepared to have a mask or bandana depending on Kung Flu restrictions where you are.

As for books, a Catholic approved Holy bible is a good start. Get one that you can share with other members of your household and one you can keep for yourself ideally from a printing prior to 1960. Once you've done that, get yourself a copy of "The Longer Catechism of The Orthodox, Catholic, Eastern Church" by St Philaret of Moscow.

The Longer Catechism of the Orthodox Church is comparable to the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church in that they are comprehensive books to help a layman such as yourself understand what are fundamental Orthodox and Roman Catholic doctrines, respectively. They have a question and answer format that's easy to follow. If you find yourself curious to pick up other books, there is an immense library of freely available digital books on the way understood as Christianity available to you, though I cannot say specifically where. I pray this helps you to be successful in finding your way to Jesus.
