@houseoftolstoy I've run up against this same issue, though not specifically about Russia. The conclusion I reached is that they're simply a product of the age they lived in.
Boomers and older lived during a time when many countries enjoyed relatively high-trust societies and all of the benefits associated with them. This lasted a large proportion of their lives, sometimes even their entire lives. As they aged, they generally checked out of society yet maintained the belief that, outside of a few outliers, society remained unchanged. They couldn't see -and had no interest in seeing- how things were deteriorating around them.
In short they suffer from the same fundamental problem that many bloopies do; they're trying to play an updated game with an old set of rules.
To @woodsmoke 's point: "I don't want their twilight years to be filled with me fighting with them about shit that ultimately doesn't matter in our day-to-day lives." I concur. The members of my family who would've been clever enough to understand are long dead. For the rest I sprinkle crushed redpills when the opportunity arises, fully understanding that it is a pointless endeavor.
