The root of every trouble.

Today is the two-year anniversary of the grand opening of our completely overhauled studio and chapel, from where we are able to bring you all our programming each day. Many hundreds of you contributed to our expansion effort back then, and we would like to once again thank you for your generosity.

When we look out at the culture and see the wars over Elon Musk's Twitter world and the full-scale battle playing out in Arizona in the governor's race, not to mention the constant inter-Nicene battles raging in the Church over doctrine and discipline, What's really going on? is a good question.

The answer is pretty simple, actually. It's a war over truth. Call them the "truth wars." Truth seems to be an elusive item these days and certainly a rare commodity, as all sides lay claim to it — but it cannot be the case that everyone is right. Yet somehow that proposition is put forward, at least by some.

It's the cry of the "your truth/my truth" brigade, as though truth is somehow in the eyes of the beholder. But notice, no one who claims that, actually lives according to that proposition — or if they do, they soon find out in short order that they do not get to claim their own personalized truth.

But for most people, that the world is round, gravity exists, two plus two equals four, and so forth, are truths — or, better stated, examples of natural truth. It's not a great leap. The refusal to accept natural truth almost always has immediate unhappy consequences.

But where outcomes or consequences can be delayed and altered for a desired outcome, then truth becomes very flexible. It can either be ignored or embellished or whitewashed or even lied about if the reward is valued more highly than the truth itself.

This seems to be the lifeblood of most media outlets, Catholic as well as secular. It likewise appears to be the dominant strain in interpersonal relationships, the professional world, the world of commerce and so forth. It has even found its way into the Church and the expression of religious doctrine.

The refusal to accept religious truth is what lies at the root of the nation's woes as well as those of the Catholic Church's leaders. Unlike natural truths, which have almost an immediate ramification when ignored, the ramifications of refusing to accept supernatural truth often unfold over time — but by the time it begins to be felt, it's often too late.

Too bad.

Well, here's a little information that the Vatican is not going to like, not to mention the U.S. bishops.

When Pope St. John XXIII became pope, the very first encyclical he issued was called Ad Petri Cathedram, in 1959. It was written and published barely eight months after he became pope and addresses truth, unity and peace in the spirit of charity. The document consists of 150 paragraphs, and so it becomes an interesting point that one of the very first things the pope approaches as a major topic is the media.

For example, from paragraph 16 (again, near the very top of the encyclical): "Radio broadcasts, motion pictures and television shows which make error and vice attractive must be opposed by shows which defend truth and strive to preserve the integrity and safety of morals." From paragraph 15: "The weapons of truth, then, must be used in defense against these weapons of evil."

Most people can't think straight.

We are in a political war these days. It is a war being fought on the battlefield of politics because we have lost on the battlefields of culture — and theology before that and philosophy before that. So politics is the only remaining battlefield left before civil war.

But notice, the first skirmish to have been lost was on the battlefield of philosophy. In truth, once you lose that battle, it's impossible to win any future ones because philosophy sets the parameters of all remaining battles. It defines language, morals, laws — everything. In short, the object of philosophy is truth itself.

A person's philosophy determines how he sees the world and then corresponds actions to that worldview. As we see so frequently, and with increasing frequency these days, the very concept of truth in and of itself is almost completely gone.

So, we get ridiculous scenes like a Supreme Court nominee who is a woman being unable to provide a definition of "woman." The determinants of sex, male and female, are simply jettisoned in favor of whatever a person wants them to be and then relabeled as gender. For the record, human beings don't have "genders." We have either the male sex or the female sex, but even that concept has fallen prey to the "there is no such thing as truth" crowd.

Of course, the philosophical war against truth has been centuries in the making. Like all cancers, it started slowly at first, barely perceptible. But once a foothold is established — a base of operations, we might say — then things pick up and advance more and more rapidly.

But who would run it?

800 years ago, in 1232, Pope Gregory IX established an ecclesiastical tribunal whose chief aim was the rooting out of heresy. Bring back the Inquisition but with one caveat: Most, virtually all, of the current hierarchy is not allowed to serve on it. Indeed, certain hierarchs would be the objects of the tribunal, not the inquisitors.

The point of the inquisitions (plural, because there were different ones, and the Protestants had their own after the revolt in the 16th century) was to not just bring a heretic back from his ways, but failing that, to prevent him spreading his errors to others. Seen in that light, the Inquisition was largely about justice. Innocent souls have a right to the truth and a right to be protected from falsehoods.

That was the driving force behind the Church's Inquisitions. That is why we need them back again, removed from any taint of the hierarchy, because it is precisely from certain hierarchs that the innocent need to be protected. Viewed again from the perspective of justice, we can't think of anything other than an Inquisition to mete it out properly. The complicit, cowardly bishops, as well as the crooked and corrupt ones, will not confront those who bring a scourge to the people of God.

It's always done to conceal the truth.

Listening to the media fallout from the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe, as well as a host of other rulings this term, you’d think the world was coming to an end. Headlines like "Judicial Activism" and "Illegitimate Court" dominate the Marxist media.

What the media types are banking on (or at the very least, hoping for) is that the majority of people can be snookered into thinking the current court is the activist one — not the various courts that preceded it for decades.

It all revolves around a proper understanding of the Constitution, meaning, Should it be seen in a very narrow manner or a very broad manner?

A very narrow meaning means just that. Only the rights laid out in it count — life, liberty and pursuit of happiness; press; speech; religion and so forth. Of course, as time goes by, all that sometimes needs interpreting, but never so much as to actually create new rights.

No, it's not the tone; it's the truth.

As many of you know, Church Militant not only extols the glories of the Catholic faith, we also delve into the corruption of various leaders in the Church. This corruption — be it moral, financial, doctrinal or liturgical — creates an impediment for many, many people either coming into the Church or trying to remain in Her.

That is the driving force behind our reporting on the corruption — to expose it and help end it. But given the nature of some of what we report (which is all-too-frequently gruesome), some people tell us things like, "I agree with what you're saying, it's just the tone."

Or another favorite (especially when we are exposing moral corruption, which largely centers around homosexuals in the clergy), "Its a little too, you know, direct."

Embrace it or perish.

In these tumultuous times, it's really important for the faithful to recall first principles:

• There is a God
• That God is a Trinity of Persons
• The Second Person of that Trinity is the Eternal Logos
• The Eternal Logos was incarnated to redeem us by His sacrificial death and rose, conquering death and establishing His victory
• He then established His Church in time and space to carry His victory to the ends of the earth — until He returns at the conclusion of time and space

In our current day, many people would agree with almost every bit of that — everything, in fact, until we get to the "Church" part. That's where things get sticky, shall we say, because of the word "Church."

This is where the great departure occurs and where things get all jammed up — largely owing to pride or ignorance. But the results, the consequences of pride or ignorance, can have eternal consequences.

The Church established by the incarnate Eternal Logos was, and remains, the Catholic Church. It is the one and only Church. All others are frauds, in that they were made by man but claim to have some divine aspect to them on their own.
