@Farang131

Most people think psych degrees teach you about top tier manipulation tactics

It really doesn't. I've learned more about psychology outside of my degree but none the less it was a good foundation

The brain and body really work in tandem in ways you wouldn't expect

@Farang131 if anything over the years I've noticed the brain is physical and therefore the mind must be based on the physical laws as well

One of the most useful pieces of information I obtained in my psychology education was 'Gate Control Theory ' in my brain and body course

Essentially, if you are in physical pain, if you apply minor pain and pressure just outside of where you are experiencing physical pain, your spinal cord will negate and suppress the experience of pain around the injured site

I.e. if you hurt you leg and rub just outside of it, your spinal cord (CNS; central nervous system) will negate the pain via nerve pathways

Similarly, I find that if you experience a psychologically distressing event, that mastering and tending to adjacent successes often ameliorates similar pain

@Vermillion-Rx Boy, could I have EVER used this as I was coming of age in the mid 80s, somewhat aspie and well behind the curve compared to my peers. The advice available at the time was rooted in 50s-60s norms. Dale Carnegie's How to win friends and influence people was a notable exception that holds up well to this day, but I didn't get my hands on a copy till the late 90s. My well meaning Mom told me, Just watch people, how they interact and make friends! Not very helpful, toward trying to jump start a social awareness later than all your peers, with no experience thus clue at the subtleties and presumptions others had worked through the learning curve of.

Literally spelling out all these details about social interaction, represents EXACTLY what guys currently in our younger shoes need, to get to a place on the learning curve where "just watching others interact " offers clues and insights one can actually pick up on then become able to learn from and actually integrate into the self.

They often did the best they could for you with the knowledge they had for you at the time

Like Staind said:

I cannot blame this on my father

He did the best he could for me

My parents both had their faults, but at least they were loving and supportive. I've met so many people whose parents weren't, that I've learned to let any resentment go and just be grateful for how good they actually were.

Rest in peace, dad.

I've nothing to forgive. Plenty I could criticize were I so inclined,a few I'd change if I could. But it ain't the Old Man's fault the world has passed him by and invalidated a lot of the wisdom he was taught as a kid.
