@SeasonedRP I often like to think that the quest for the perfect load is a bit like a slut's quest for the perfect man. It needs to do as much of everything as possible. It must; be accurate, hit very hard, be kind to your barrel and drop minimally. Sorry princess you can't have it all. But we keep trying and unlike the cock carousel princess you do get to keep the load once you have nailed it. But it can be expensive. So much for it saving you money.
I think my most expensive idea was getting in tungsten shot from China for a goose load. Yeah it works, yeah its devastating but it patterns so tight that it either misses or wastes anything that isn't a long long way away.
@First-light Very zippy. These were pretty hot loads. We tried different powders and uses the Hodgdon book which spells out how to load for which velocity with which grain of bullet.

@SeasonedRP I have never used on but my guess is its pretty zippy and will drop a bit less than the 30 cals?
@First-light I loaded a bunch of bullets for it (under the tutelage of my stepdad) and as I recall we used 90 grain bullets and tried out different loads until we found the most accurate one at 200 yards. The range had 200 yard rifle targets so it was convenient to sight in.
@SeasonedRP If zeroed at 100m my 308 will drop 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches at 150 m depending on ammunition. 30 06 sends them a bit quicker in return for burning quite a lot more powder.
The harmonic point is worth considering when it comes to the barrel. If he has not matched his ammunition to his barrel harmonics, he could get something whacky going on if he picked an unlucky round off the shelf. Mauser barrels are made in a very high tech factory and are designed to be pretty tolerant.
Anyone who didn't take a centre of visible mass shot would I think be unwise - the head just moves too much- but he doesn't seem like he was a very experienced shot and the movies keep showing these head shots that just drop people cold, so who knows. Possibly not the most sensible kid to start...
