@lurkerhasarisen In a recent case I observed Officers carrying M4s during Operation Lone Star in Fronton Island

while the cops are the last responders.
It varies. When my wife was a cop, she'd occasionally beat the firefighters and paramedics to scenes. A lot depends on who is closer.
And of course, because life's like that, the scenes where she beat them were ones where there was a fire and/or injured people, and the scenes when the cops were beaten there were when there was violence in progress.
[Late insertion - I originally missed where you said "The people on the scene are the first responders", but I'm not deleting all the stuff I said]

I'm with you, that you and I should be allowed to have better firearms as well. Let the cops and law-abiding citizens have them.
If I'm coming across as having a low opinion of civilian cops, it's because I do. I've known a few good ones, but I've known far too many idiots, bullies, and scumbags to think highly of them as a group.
They're people too, and all people suck.

Why TF do civilian cops need military weapons?
Because they aren't able to get erections. So they grow moustaches, get fat and hang around talking about 'firepower'.

@lurkerhasarisen but............having more 'firepower' makes up for having a tiny pee-pee, doesn't it?

The number of American cops who have been killed or wounded by machine gun fire is approximately zero. Even if that were not the case, it's unclear to me why giving them machine guns would help. Cops need aimed fire, not fulll-auto covering fire.
The rifle I carried in Afghanistan didn't even have full-auto capability (it could either fire single shots or three-round bursts).
If those guys need weapons of war for the one-in-ten-million situation where having one would produce a better outcome than having a rifle they can aim... there are a whole lot of things they could buy that would be a lot more useful a lot more often (de-escalation training, for starters).
