I can't remember the source, but it was a top tier scientist that proposed such a research (maybe R. Trivers or R. Dunbar), expressing his strong feeling that this is the case. I don't know if anyone followed through with the actual research.

Benefits: Russia could actually commit to peace talks and they have trump always talking that USA wanTS t it and how muCH Ukraine wont get support etc. By saying that he appeals to his electorate as well.
