I was junior enlisted. The ridicule came from my chain of command and NCO support channel.
To be fair to them, they really didn't have an alternative to dispose of this stuff. Some of it was ordinary trash, but a lot of it could be used against us. It had to be kept out of enemy hands.

For my part, I'm all about health and safety. I wear at least my safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves even on jobs with no PPE requirements, and I don't give 2 shits what anyone else thinks. I've had too many close calls with my eyes, so I protect them.
As far as environmental stuff goes, it would be easier to persuade the skeptical if everyone stuck to what's real, such as just not polluting waterways or littering or the causes of acid rain.
But when people go into hysterics about stupid, unproven bullshit, that's when even people like me start to no longer care about the real shit and just want to pollute out of spite.
I recall the collection of National Geographic magazines my parents had dating back to the late 1960s up through my childhood in the 1980s and early 1990s (divorce led to lapsed subscription). The issues from the 1970s warned about an upcoming ice age. By the 1990s, the same retards were worried about "global warming". After receiving much rightful ridicule over the years, they started calling it "climate change".
Let's rightfully call it what it is: hokum, and hokum used to destroy industry and promote excess governmental control.
Don't even get me started on that "green energy" crap. I work on some of this shit, and it does more harm than good.

1) amid the bullshit concerns for "global warming", the polar icecaps increased in size, as did the glaciers being tracked in Greenland, Alaska, Norway, Iceland, Canada, Mt. Kiliminjaro and other large mountains and mountain ranges and various other locations.
2) the impending ice age concerns were bullshit. The smog was a legitimate health concern, but it wasn't going to cause an ice age.
3) ignore what they say, but watch what they do: observe the behaviors of the loudest speakers about CO2 emissions. From Algore to John Kerry to Taylor Swift to AOC to Barack Obama to Bill Gates to Greta Thunberg and other eurotrash: they want us regular plebeians to drive our cars less, use less air conditioning, and use paper straws while they special ruling class emit more CO2 in a single trip in each of their private jets than any one other person does in an entire year of using their car. It's not about any real concern for any real environmental issue: it's about controlling us. "You will own noting, you will repair nothing, you will eat bugs, you will live in pods, and you will be happy!"
