It's more than just boys.

We reported in yesterday's Vortex on the legal hellhole the archdiocese of Baltimore has fallen into, owing to a flood of 600 lawsuits over sexual predation of minors.

It is very likely that, in short order, Abp. William Lori will file for bankruptcy protection for his archdiocese — the first diocese established in America.

Aside from the symbolic blow such a move would be to the Church in the United States — joining 30 other dioceses in filing for bankruptcy for the same reason — there is an entirely overlooked aspect to all this as well.

It isn't just minors that have been sexually assaulted, although those cases are the ones that make headlines because of the victims' ages.

There are also vulnerable adults — especially seminarians who have been and are assaulted by homopredator clergy.

Recall that most of Theodore McCarrick's victims were not minors, although significantly some were, but were mostly seminarians at his Jersey Shore beach house — and then this went on for years.

Charges and accusations just like this have plagued seminaries and their faculties for decades now, up to and including the prestigious bishop factory in Rome: the North American College.

Most of the time, corrupt leaders circle the wagons and get rid of the whistle-blower seminarians and then return to business as usual.

One such leader who is accused of this is the Baltimore archbishop, William Lori, the chaplain of the Knights of Columbus who, by the way, has yet to release any statement on the Maryland attorney general's report proving Lori kept predators and cover-up personnel in place.

He knew what had happened and participated in the cover-up. For that alone, if he doesn't resign, he should be removed by Pope Francis.

Which is worse?

We are in Texas, on assignment for a couple of days, but the Fr. Frank Pavone story is still dominating headlines in the Catholic world. The way the Church has handled this case has done nothing except continue to erode trust in the bishops.

That they can't see that (what everyone else clearly sees) is extremely disturbing. But then again, this is how these men operate. Nothing is ever transparent. Almost nothing is done above board. You can't get a straight answer about anything out of anyone attached to the establishment.

Without my speaking to specifics of the ruling from Rome that Frank Pavone has been laicized, look at everything else surrounding this case. As we discussed yesterday in The Vortex, a letter to the bishops from apostolic nuncio Abp. Christophe Pierre was leaked from inside to the Catholic News Agency.

Why? What was the purpose of leaking that letter? Who leaked it, even before Pavone or his canonist had been informed of the Holy See's decision (which had been made a whole month earlier)? Bad form, fellows, even for your lot. Imagine being delivered a death sentence, which laicization is for a priest, and everyone else knowing it before you. And then, broadening the circle, we have to engage in some what-about questions. What about James Martin and his case compared to Frank Pavone's? That is a more than fair comparison to be made.

And people of goodwill look at all this and rightly protest not necessarily the decision to kick out Fr. Pavone (a decision shrouded in secrecy and God knows what else, including the possibility of ill will) but the hypocrisy of saying disobedience to a local bishop is so bad, but disobedience to the teachings of the Church — not so much.

That is what is at the heart of the outrage. And bishops, that outrage is merited and your lot owns every bit of it. You are detestable cowards who run the Church like your own private fiefdom. That doesn't mean you don't have the authority — you absolutely do. But your abuse of that authority will damn the lot of you. Just as any other person who betrays a trust, an authority, an oath. Repent, or die in your sins. And no amount of talking points or a nice little memo from a nuncio will get a hearing at your judgment.

James Martin needs to be kicked out of the priesthood, and someone needs to file a canon law case against him for heresy. Heresy is far worse than blasphemy. The bishops won't because he's one of them. That will not bode well when they are being charged by the Supreme Shepherd with disobedience to Him.

That's a bit two-faced, isn't it?

In the past few days, the retired former archbishop of Philadelphia (and before that, Denver) Charles Chaput stood in front of an audience and decried Joe Biden on abortion and being able to receive Holy Communion and so forth. Normally, actions and statements like those would be worth applauding and, certainly, the pure and simple message is.

However, as usual when a member of the U.S. hierarchy speaks, there is always the "grain of salt" factor you have to consider. Numerous well-known "orthodox" clergy seem to all of a sudden be so terribly concerned with the state of affairs in the Church that has bled over predictably to the state of affairs in the world, culture and government. It's almost like they have no idea that their reigns as bishops in key times and places around the country actually helped set the stage for this meltdown we are all now falling victim to.

Since Chaput put himself out there with his recent remarks, let's do a brief review of him and his past actions as a good example. When he was in Philadelphia, he hosted the World Meeting of Families. Nothing extraordinary about that until (because there is always an "until" with these "orthodox" ones), he invited two of the most Culture of Death politicos you could imagine — you know, the anti-family guys — to be honorary chairmen of the World Meeting of Families.

One was Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf, the lowest form of political life possible, because he was the only governor in American history who was also a "death-scort" for Planned Parenthood — you know, death-scorts. Those are the folks who wear the school crossing guard vests and block access from pro-lifers to women about to walk in and kill their children. Yup. Couldn't think of anyone better to be an honorary chairman for the World Meeting of Families.

Coming in a close second, however — because for Chaput, one just wasn't enough — he installed then-Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter as another honorary chair. Nutter has just wrapped up announcing to the world how proud he was that he and his administration were able to make Philadelphia the most gay city in America. Whether that claim is actually true or not is beside the point. Nutter believed it to be true and was happy to take a bow.

So what does the "orthodox" Catholic archbishop of Philadelphia do? Well, make him an honorary chairman of the World Meeting of Families. What else?
