@Saltycroc several reasons, mostly simple:
1) Briffault's Law always applies. If the woman decides she's no longer benefiting, the relationship ends.
2) women make decisions based off of instinct and emotion. Don't expect their decisions to make any logical sense to an outside observer who is missing information (such as where she is in her monthly cycle).
3) it's frequently not about which man is objectively best, but rather the one she perceives (read feeeeeels) is best. This is why women's parents picked their husbands for millennia across all cultures; young women are terrible pickers. A man you perceive as "alpha" might be a spineless wimp when dealing with his woman behind closed doors. Famous example: Will Smith with his wife.
4) there's no such thing as an "alpha male". Alpha and beta are better understood as traits and behaviors that all men possess and display to varying degrees, with "alpha" being arousal and "beta" being comfort. This ties back to Briffault's Law and what the woman wants in that moment.
5) women are almost always seeking upgrades, especially if not currently satisfied for whatever (usually frivolous) reason.
6) some (many) women are just sluts, plain and simple.

Nothing in life is ever guaranteed.
The best you can do is make your odds as favorable as possible.
I guess ideally you would want to be both “alpha” and “beta” then.
Beta/comfort must be earned by the woman. If you give too much too soon, you'll put her off.
If you consistently withhold it over time, she'll leave.

You can still form connections. Just be ready for connections to end.

I mainly recommend Athol Kay's book for the stuff you're asking. It's foundational for MRP, and I recommend guys who never plan to get married read it as well.

Check it out, @Saltycroc: none of this stuff is holy scripture. Some of what's in his post is great. Some of it, not so much. As with anything that's more art than science, YMMV.
for my part, I didn't want a woman to be bitchy or stuck-up. I also found that trying to win over a woman who was actively disinterested as you described was a big waste of time and energy.
