For the love of the automobile

@MentORPHEUS There were still some on the road when I started driving (not a lot), and people were making fun of them by that time.

@Typo-MAGAshiv the Gremlin, now that was mechanically a gigantic piece of shit. I remember the first time my Mom saw one she liked the big windows. But they earned a bad reputation quickly, which was borne out by few remaining on the road by the early 80s.

@Typo-MAGAshiv the Pinto got much criticism and was the button of many jokes, but was waaay ahead of its time technologically.
The gas tank rupture issue got questionably addressed with a plastic shield between it and the differential. The bulletproof 2.3l 4 banger got used in many vehicles and they even made a turbocharged variant.
My Mom had a 79 Capri with one, that was handicapped by ham fisted shortcuts to reach fleetwide fuel economy targets. Very high rear end ratio, and 3rd gear was reduction but 4th overdrive, making it absolutely gutless . She HAAAATED that car!
