However, I. The personal sphere, honor still has a meaning. It's what makes a man able to have long-lasting, even lifelong, friendships.
This is so important that I'd say it defines two categories of men.
And however shining it may look sometimes, there something profoundly missing in the lives of men that are unable to have a true buddy.
@adam-l Since the great error of female suffrage, honour has been removed from the individual in our civilisation. It has a zero or perhaps a negative value -it costs a man something but does not gain him any benefit
Honourably declaring all your income to the tax man or all your possessions to the divorce judge for example costs you but wins you no credit later if your wife calls you controlling and you say she is a liar. There are just the rules.
The great virtue is now compliance. Is your business compliant to regulation? (not are you an honest business man who looks after his staff and clients)? did you comply to the speed limit? (not did you drive sensibly considering other traffic, road and weather conditions).
Who are best at being complaint? -Women. Whatever the culture, they vie to be most compliant and roast the non complaint.
Civilisation suits women greatly -it offers structure and rules to comply to. It creates a clear hierarchy where high ranking females can use low ranking males and females to do all their work. Western civilisation gives women great privilege and now that honour is removed from it and vested in the state not the man, its even better than ever for them because they have no responsibility.

It's only since women have been conditioned to be non submissive, low value and attitude filled that it has become necessary for men to learn to override this default setting for their own protection.
There is one more thing, that is culture-independent and has been with us since the dawn of human race. Women are impervious to civilization. They don't have a neural representation for a "word of honor" - and this alone might summarize the core differences between man and woman.
They had always needed constant external means of helping, or forcing them to keep within society.

@adam-l I agree that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
I think there are also other divine archetypes beyond the mother. A beautiful young fertile woman is another. She is also instinctively a goddess to men. She has such value from generative power.
Have you ever noticed the phenomenon of light attaching to a girl? In my younger days it could really seem that way -a beautiful girl stood out brighter on the other side of the room. Moved with grace, almost seemed to walk on air.
"With my body I thee worship" I recall that since my first wife vowed to obey me, I in return had to vow to worship her.
