I was junior enlisted. The ridicule came from my chain of command and NCO support channel.

To be fair to them, they really didn't have an alternative to dispose of this stuff. Some of it was ordinary trash, but a lot of it could be used against us. It had to be kept out of enemy hands.

For my part, I'm all about health and safety. I wear at least my safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves even on jobs with no PPE requirements, and I don't give 2 shits what anyone else thinks. I've had too many close calls with my eyes, so I protect them.

As far as environmental stuff goes, it would be easier to persuade the skeptical if everyone stuck to what's real, such as just not polluting waterways or littering or the causes of acid rain.

But when people go into hysterics about stupid, unproven bullshit, that's when even people like me start to no longer care about the real shit and just want to pollute out of spite.

I recall the collection of National Geographic magazines my parents had dating back to the late 1960s up through my childhood in the 1980s and early 1990s (divorce led to lapsed subscription). The issues from the 1970s warned about an upcoming ice age. By the 1990s, the same retards were worried about "global warming". After receiving much rightful ridicule over the years, they started calling it "climate change".

Let's rightfully call it what it is: hokum, and hokum used to destroy industry and promote excess governmental control.

Don't even get me started on that "green energy" crap. I work on some of this shit, and it does more harm than good.

@Typo-MAGAshiv just remembered a vignette about the shop next door that did contact work for Enterprise Rental cars. Instead of proper used oil storage in covered tank with secondary catchment, they had 55 gallon drums full lined against a brick wall in the open. One hot day, one of his mechanics' last acts on the job, was the classic pulling a car out after a brake job without pumping up the pedal first. He slammed into those barrels with his foot trying to press the brake pedal through the floorboard. Parked on both sides were 1-2 year new Enterprise cars with all the windows down including the one he was driving. About 200 gallons of extra black used oil (Enterprise specified change every 15,000mi and filter only every second time) geysered skyward, and came down over all the cars and their open windows and sunroof. I came back from lunch to find the seldom seen staff of the print shop whose back wall was hit, grouped in our driveway watching the chaos of the staff frantically wiping up oil with months worth of shop towels and anything else, the Boss cursing the guy rolling his tool chest to the curb, and an ExxonMobil Valdez scale spill of oil spreading.
