Stanford "Facebook Class" (CS 377W / Fall 2007)

Instructors: B.J. Fogg (Persuasive Technology Lab) and Dave McClure.

~75 students in teams of 3. Assignment: Build and launch Facebook apps (platform opened to third-party developers in 2007). Focus on rapid launch, user acquisition, engagement metrics, iteration. No exams or papers. Use psychology principles (reciprocity, social proof, emotional triggers) for virality.

Students built over 50 apps (some reports: ~31 launched). Examples: virtual hugs, kisses, pillow fights, Send Hotness (rate friends' attractiveness and send points), animated birthday messages, virtual children. Most were simple, game-like.

Results (10 weeks):

Collective installs: ~16–20 million users.

At least 5 apps reached 1+ million users each.

10+ apps reached 100k+ users.

Peak daily active users: ~925,000.

5 apps reached Facebook Top 100.

Advertising revenue from free apps: ~$1 million during the quarter (some reports $500k–$1M+ in first ~6 months).

Send Hotness: 5 million users in 5 weeks, ~$3,000/day from ads.

One team (Dan Greenberg + Rob Fan): nearly $100,000/month from their app.

Student outcomes:

Joachim De Lombaert, Edward Baker, Alex Onsager (Send Hotness team): App reached millions of users; earned significant ad revenue; sold for six figures. Later founded Friend.ly (~5 million monthly users).

Dan Greenberg: Dropped out of Stanford grad school. Turned app work into 750 Industries (later Sharethrough, ad-tech company; raised millions in VC; employed dozens; later acquired).

Multiple apps acquired (one by Zynga). At least 3–5 companies directly spun out. Over two dozen students/TAs saw major career or financial gains (some became millionaires before graduation).

Final presentations drew 500+ attendees including investors and Facebook engineers.

The class demonstrated rapid build-measure-learn iteration on a new platform, years before "lean startup" terminology became common. Some apps were later criticized as low-value or addictive.

Facebook user base grew significantly during this period (~50M to 100M).

@redpillschool Gaaaah slow walkers... I remember going to some big show at the civic auditorium with a date's church group. When it was over we spent 20+ minutes slowly working our way down the grand 4 story staircase. At the bottom her church group decided the bottom of the staircase (still backed up all the way to the top) was the perfect place to stop, circle up, and start saying long goodbyes. Clarence Kennedy has high numbers and he has been training under quality coach from Poland, so also his educational content is highly informative. I don't promote his business so I don't care about his coaching skills. For "sidebar material" it's quintessential to make best out of information publicly available. Also you might know that Oleksiy Torokhtiy has a lot of edu content on his yt channel. Personally I don't watch him too much.

It's an interesting ratio mate, but "world is proper fucked" status happens only when central banks lose control. That event occurs when 24hr borrowing markets freeze up, which is what kicked off the 2008 full panic. Once the banks cannot accurately price US Treasuries, which serve as the benchmark for every other piece of debt in the world, the overnight markets freeze.

Ask any (former or current) banker and they will tell you that the "repo market" or repurchase market is the signal. About $2-4 trillion USD trades there every day.

A repurchase agreement (repo) is a short-term secured loan: one party sells securities to another and agrees to repurchase those securities later at a higher price. The securities serve as collateral. The difference between the securities’ initial price and their repurchase price is the interest paid on the loan, known as the repo rate.

Holding cash is, tautologically, expense for banks. It doesn't pay interest. However, if banks decide they need to hold $XXX in excess reserves, and their net position is short of that self-defined number, they exit the repo market and hold treasuries and cash. This means, in short, they stop lending. When there are a lot of people with Treasuries who want to use them as collateral for cash, demand exceeds supply in this scenario. The repo rate rises sharply. Suddenly, $2-4trn USD gets 3-4x more expensive.

THAT is when things collapse.
