Understandable, but annoying. Much like when civilians call any Servicemember a "soldier" (Soldiers are in the Army, Airmen are Air Force, Sailors are Navy, and Marines are Marines).
The distinction does matter.

Case in point is the widespread perception of Alpha as a "type of man", while it is a state of being which every man, except for the lunatics, enters and exits. But we're clearing this out, gradually (and I highly recommend @Woujo 's writings on this).
I prefer Athol Kay's use of it, that MRP adopted:

alpha: traits and behaviors that lead to women being sexually aroused by you, aka get her pussy wet. EG: having muscles, being dominant, being charming, etc
- beta: traits and behaviors that build comfort. EG: cuddling, providing/generosity, etc.
Far more useful than any kind of state of being, whether permanent or temporary.
And Roissy/Heartiste beat Woujo to it, with his concept of the "situational alpha".
