Reading good books from our sphere and beyond- reading should be a communal activity, with shared insight and discussion.

Castalia Library Stacks
We’re pleased to report a few new developments that will be of interest to Library and History subscribers. First, the test stamping of Castalia History Book 2 was successful and you can see the results at the new Castalia Library substack. These are promising to be our most aesthetically successful books yet. While we are still utilizing the mailing list and the LibraryThing group, too many subscribers have somehow been falling through the cracks, so we’ve created this new substack that everyone who is interested can follow either through the site or the emails.
Second, since there won’t be daily updates, at least not until we’re doing a LOT more books, we are going to be serializing one of our Library books there. There isn’t much point in doing Dracula, since there is already an extremely popular substack dedicated to serializing that, so we’re giving you the choice of one of four current or coming Library/History books. There is a poll there running for the next two days, so feel free to make your voice heard.
- DISCOURSES ON LIVY by Niccolo Machiavelli
- STUDIES ON THE NAPOLEONIC WARS by Sir Charles Oman
- PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen
- WAR AND PEACE by Leo Tolstoy
And third, speaking of serialization, we’ve set up a substack dedicated to the Junior Classics. This may or may not be of any interest to those who already have them, in leather, hardcover, or ebook, but we think it is a good way of helping bring them to the attention of homeschool parents and others who have never heard of the Junior Classics.
If you’re wondering why we’re utilizing Substack now, the fact that the Sigma Game substack already has 137k views in little more than two weeks should suffice to explain it. I expect it to surpass this blog in terms of traffic by the time the book comes out.
We’re also working hard on getting production caught up, and the leathers for both volumes of War and Peace as well as four other books are being ordered now that we have the final size of the interiors. On the bindery front, both hubbing tools have been made and the first one will be tested as soon as the coming week. That’s the last major challenge we face before Team Europe can start tackling The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, as well as to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks." It was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart and is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of books or individual stories in the public domain. All files can be accessed for free under an open format layout, available on almost any computer. As of 3 October 2015, Project Gutenberg had reached 50,000 items in its collection of free eBooks.
The releases are available in plain text as well as other formats, such as HTML, PDF, EPUB, MOBI, and Plucker wherever possible. Most releases are in the English language, but many non-English works are also available. There are multiple affiliated projects that provide additional content, including region- and language-specific works. Project Gutenberg is closely affiliated with Distributed Proofreaders, an Internet-based community for proofreading scanned texts.
Project Gutenberg is named after Johannes Gutenberg, who introduced book printing with movable type in Europe.

Figure I’d post some of my learnings from 48 Laws since we started June 1st. I’m reading on my phone.
Preface: “ “Treating everyone equally means ignoring their differences, elevating the less skillful and suppressing those who excel. Again, many of those who behave this way are actually deploying another power strategy, redistributing people’s rewards in a way that they determine.”
Law 1: Never Outshine the Master.” Key Takeaway: “Remember the following: Never take your position for granted and never let any favors you receive go to your head” pg. 90/1780
I see this a lot in my work. People are places in positions of power, and not necessarily by virtue of their capability. Being “liked” is crucial. Especially when it comes to getting what you want. The boss has overall authority to determine a lot in your life. His/her word carries weight simply because they have been there so long and people “value” their “expertise”. Do what you can to get into their good graces, and you’ll have the weight of a superior.
Law 2: Key Takeaway: “While a friend expects more and more favors, and seethes with jealousy, these former enemies expected nothing and got everything. A man suddenly spared the guillotine is a grateful man indeed, and will go to the ends of the earth for the man who has pardoned him. In time, these former enemies became Sung’s most trusted friends.” // “Your enemies, on the other hand, are an untapped gold mine that you must learn to exploit.”
I have people who I run into every once and a while who are true betrayers. People who conspired against me in order to detract away from themselves. I let myself become weak, and they took advantage of it. In the words of Gang Starr: “My only crime was being too damn kind. And now some scandalous mother fuckers want to take what’s mine.” Ironically, some of these same people came to me years later and admitted that what they did was wrong. It never occurred to me to use exploit an enemy for benefit.
The saying “kill them with kindness” may be better translated as “exploit them with kindness”.
Enemies will do everything in their power to prove to you that they are not a “villain”, especially if they know they have done something wrong, or you come from a place of power. Abuse this.

I recommend reading “The Prince“ by Machiavelli to all of you. It’s not too easy to read and understand but it will sharpen your skills, giving you valuable information.

Still taking suggestions- looks like the 48 Laws is a good start, and a great piece for everyone to chime in with stories, theories, and general reactions to each law [maybe two a week on the table for people to respond to]. I'm thinking we start June 1st- as a way to let more people join before we get going.
Feel free to promote us!
I'll be working on our Tribal Texts side bar list ASAP

Great idea with the book club.
I have read about the 48 laws of power numerous times. The 33 strategies of war are equally important for long term strategy. Both great books that have helped me with my life more than everything I’ve ever read.
